🌌Rohini Nakshatra – Astronomical Facts

🔭 Star Name: Aldebaran

  • Rohini Nakshatra corresponds to the bright red star Aldebaran (Alpha Tauri) in modern astronomy.

  • It’s one of the brightest stars in the night sky and located in the Taurus constellation.

  • The name “Aldebaran” comes from Arabic and means “the follower” (as it appears to follow the Pleiades).

📍 Position in the Zodiac

  • Rohini spans from 10°00’ to 23°20’ in Taurus (Vrishabha Rashi).

  • Aldebaran has a maximum declination among stars linked to nakshatras, which is why it’s associated with the Moon’s strong influence.

  • Aldebaran, one of the most prominent stars visible from Earth, appears to be part of the Hyades star cluster, which is a well-known and easily recognisable grouping of stars located in the constellation Taurus. Despite this visual association, Aldebaran is actually situated significantly closer to our planet, at an approximate distance of 65 light years away. This difference in distance is important to note, as the Hyades cluster itself is about 151 light years from Earth. Therefore, while Aldebaran shares the same general region of the sky as the Hyades, it is not a member of this cluster, but rather a foreground star, shining brightly and distinctly in the night sky.

  • This proximity and brightness help create the striking visual formation that resembles a “V” shape, which is characteristic of the Bull's face in the sky. In this celestial depiction, Aldebaran holds a significant position, as it forms the eye of the Bull, giving the constellation its distinctive and easily identifiable appearance. The arrangement of the stars in this “V” not only adds to the mythological and astrological significance of Taurus but also serves as a guide for stargazers navigating through the night sky. Aldebaran, being a red giant star, stands out due to its reddish hue, further enhancing its role as a focal point in this celestial formation, drawing the eyes of observers and inspiring countless stories and interpretations throughout history.

✨ Essence of Rohini

Rohini possesses Rohana Shakti—the energy that makes things grow. Anything planted here, whether physical or symbolic, tends to flourish over time. It’s a Dhruva nakshatra, meaning it has a stabilizing, enduring quality—perfect for those seeking long-term success and creative expansion.

🌕 The Enchanting Mythology of Rohini Nakshatra

Rohini Nakshatra isn’t just one of the most sensual and fertile stars in the Vedic zodiac—it’s also steeped in mythological richness. From divine romance to cosmic jealousy, the stories of Rohini reveal deep spiritual and emotional themes that shape its astrological influence.

💖 Rohini – The Moon’s Beloved

In Vedic mythology, Rohini was the favourite wife of Chandra (the Moon God). Among his 27 wives (each representing a nakshatra and daughter of Daksha), Chandra spent most of his time with Rohini, mesmerized by her beauty and grace.

This favouritism angered the other wives, leading them to complain to their father Daksha, who in turn cursed Chandra to lose his light and vitality.

✨ This curse—and its eventual modification—explains the waxing and waning of the Moon, and why Rohini is the Moon’s exaltation point, where it shines the brightest and feels the most expressive.

👶 Rohini and the Birth of Balarama

Rohini also plays a maternal role in myth. When the tyrant Kansa sought to kill all children of Devaki, Lord Vishnu transferred the 7th fetus (Balarama) to the womb of Rohini—thus making her the divine foster mother of Krishna’s elder brother.

This adds a nurturing, protective layer to Rohini’s energy—representing not just sensual beauty but also deep maternal devotion.

🔱 Deity of Creation – Prajapati

Rohini’s ruling deity is Prajapati (a form of Brahma), the creator of all living beings. This makes Rohini a nakshatra of fertility, manifestation, and growth—the power to give life to ideas, art, and offspring.

📜

Rigveda reference of deity Prajapati associated with Rohini nakshatra (Hiraṇyagarbha Sūkta)
